German Poznań 1917. The conspiratorial group of scouts is led by Czarek Adamski and Franek Relke, from a Polish-German family. They both fall in love with Dorota, who, despite her father, neglects her talent as a pianist to work in the underground. Frank is visited by Leuben, his fallen father’s commander. According to his mother, his father was conscripted into the German army against his will, while Leuben claims that Frank’s father was a German hero – he received the Iron Cross. Abandoned by a platoon of Poles, he defended the strategic point alone before he died. Leuben gives Frank his father’s watch and his message so that „Franz” finds the right path. Franek avoids the next action. Drafted into the army, he says goodbye to his unaware friends.
